ICPO attended the launch of the Copernicus Marine Service
Jose Santos, Executive Director of the ICPO, attended the Copernicus Marine Service - Phase #2 - kickoff event, which took place on the 17 and 18 of February, 2022. This event was held in a fully online format, and was organized by Mercator Ocean International. Several members of the CLIVAR community also attended the event.
Following the Copernicus Horizon 2035 Symposium, which was held on the 16 and 17 of February, the launch of the new phase (2021-2028) of the Copernicus Marine Service was an opportunity to officially mark the start of an ambitious plan for the next 7 years. This event gathered the main Copernicus Marine stakeholders and communities such as partners and downstream users and showcased the roadmap for the upcoming seven years.
Day one included a mix of plenary presentations and round table discussions with the purpose to present the Copernicus Marine strategy developed for phase #2. Themes such as Copernicus Marine priority actions for the upcoming years, support to policies for a safe, clean and healthy Ocean, integration of a digital ocean, product and service evolution and ocean reporting were highlighted. There was also the opportunity to take part in discussions of how the Copernicus Marine Service is dealing with Copernicus satellite and in-situ components, the way they are working with other Copernicus services and EMODnet and how the Copernicus Marine will contribute to and benefit from the UN Decade of Ocean Science.
