CLIVAR-CFMIP TROPICS Working Group Officially Launched

A CLIVAR-CFMIP initiated Working Group: TROpical Pacific SST Warming PatternS (TROPICS) (https://www.clivar.org/TROPICS) has been officially launched.

TROPICS is a working group under the CLIVAR Climate Dynamics panel, which brings multiple communities together working on the tropical SST pattern formation mechanisms. It involves interaction between global dynamics, air-sea interaction, and radiative processes, requiring cross-discipline collaboration and communication. Therefore, the core leadership group consists of representatives from CLIVAR Climate Dynamic Panel, CLIVAR Pacific Panel, and WCRP CFMIP under the leadership of Sarah Kang, Mat Collins, Masa Watanabe, Yen-Ting Hwang, Malte Stuecker and Shayne McGregor.

Its main goal is to obtain a robust understanding of the tropical Pacific SST warming pattern change, from the past to the future. This includes challenges in attribution, explanation, and projection of the pattern of surface temperature change either in response to global warming or generated internally.

The schematic above illustrates the tropical pattern formation mechanisms involve interaction among global dynamics, air-sea interaction, and radiative processes. The WG will bring multiple communities together. To ensure cross-discipline collaboration and communication, the core leadership group consists of representatives from CLIVAR Climate Dynamic Panel, CLIVAR Pacific Panel, and WCRP CFMIP. The WG members include committee members of the three representative communities together with early career scientists.
