The 5th workshop organised by the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (SAMOC) community happened in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 01-05 December. 

The main objective of this workshop was to bring together theoreticians, modelers and observationalists interested in the South Atlantic Ocean region and its interactions with other ocean basins. The Workshop included a strong training component for students and young researchers on days 1 and 2. Participants had the opportunity to interact and discuss with experts from the international SAMOC community and other guest specialists interested in the basin circulation and its effects on global circulation and climate. The workshop conveyed state-of-the-science knowledge and understanding of the subject, allowing participants to improve their research and to strengthen and develop new professional links. Day 3 was devoted to presentations on general South Atlantic topics, including recent advances in our understanding of the basin wide circulation and water mass characteristics, recent global and basin wide modeling studies, in-situ observations, past, on-going and future projects. Students and researchers presented their work during afternoon poster sessions. The SAMOC V Workshop conducted in days 4 and 5 was aimed at communicating preliminary results from the SAMOC observations and models and to compare these results with estimates of the MOC fluxes at other locations in the Atlantic and elsewhere. The scientific presentations were aimed at meridional and inter-ocean fluxes. The SAMOC V workshop also included discussion of ongoing and planned observations and modeling activities. The Workshop received financial support from the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, NOAA Climate Program Office, the US Department of Energy, the US CLIVAR office, the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, Servicio de Hidrografia Naval, and Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. The event was attended by participants from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Peru, South Africa, Uruguay, the United Kingdom and the United States. SAMOC is an CLIVAR-endorsed project.
