CLIVAR and PICES have had demonstrated long-time successful interdisciplinary cooperation, through the cooperation of several PICES Working Groups (WGs). In particular, the recently ended WG-40 on Climate and Ecosystem Predictability was a joint Working Group of CLIVAR and PICES, which leveraged the international expertise within both organizations, and produced great outcomes, including several meetings and workshops and a research topic of Frontiers in Marine Science on North Pacific Climate and Ecosystem Predictability on Seasonal to Decadal Timescales, as a final product of the WG. There was a perspective paper (https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2022.855965) published in this research topic, discussing how climate model predictions can be used for marine ecological forecasting. This is an important direction to which collaborations across physical climate science and marine biological science are needed. The WG-40 has successfully completed with the joint effort of PICES and CLIVAR.

During the recent PICES Physical Oceanography and Climate Committee (POC) meeting, which was held in Busan, Republic of Korea and online on 25 and 28 September 2022, there were strong interests of PICES and CLIVAR to further strengthen the cooperation of the two parties, building on the legacy of existing efforts. There are potential opportunities to cooperate on climate extreme, through the newly established PICES WG-49 on Climate Extremes and Coastal Impacts in the Pacific. Dr. Antonietta Capotondi, co-chair of CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel will be the liaison person, representing CLIVAR in the WG-49. Meanwhile, Dr. Shoshiro Minobe, co-chair of WCRP Lighthouse Activity on Explaining and Predicting of Earth System Change (EPESC) and former co-chair of CLIVAR Climate Dynamics Panel (CDP), is also trying to build the linkage between PICES and broader WCRP activities. In addition, the upcoming ICTP-CLIVAR Summer School on Marine Heatwaves: Global Phenomena with Regional Impacts (July 2023, Trieste, Italy) is also a potential opportunity to cooperate under this broader theme of climate extremes, and with the emphasis on the Early Career Scientists (ECS) capacity building. More science-based solutions can also be jointly delivered under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
